Green Grass Mats

What the mat can do

A continuous strip of grass growth laid on a flexible backing. It saves the work of scattering scatter in layers: you trace the area, trim it and glue it on, and the lawn is finished. The shade is given simply as green, so the mat works as a general-purpose base for vegetation in a grown state and gets along with most of the other scenic materials you will add on top of it.

The gluing procedure

First level the ground and dust it off. Lay the mat on dry, trace the shape and trim it from the back with a sharp blade or scissors; from the face the cut runs less well and marks the pile. Then apply PVA glue in a thin continuous layer, lay the mat on and press it down with your palm from the center toward the edges, so that no air is left underneath. Press the edges in with tweezers and let it dry without weighting.

Tips for a believable lawn

• Paint the ground a darker earthy color, so that places showing through are not visible.
• Break up continuous green with dry patches, fine scatter and bushes.
• Run the joins along paths, track or fences, where the eye does not look for them.
• Tease the edges of the pieces out, so that the transition does not end in a straight line.
• Suggest dried-out places with a dry brush in an ocher shade.

Who it is for

It suits builders of dioramas, railroad modelers and equally those building only a small base under a single vehicle or figure. A base, trees, figures and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
