The numeral in the name sets this variant apart from the basic Hex stencil — it is a separate version of the hexagonal pattern, not an add-on to the first one. It comes in the larger L format, so it suits areas where you want to repeat the pattern as much as possible in a single application.
The eye reads a hexagonal mesh as a technical, industrially made surface. That is why it appears on science-fiction hardware, on gaming models, on modern digital camouflage and anywhere you only want to suggest the structure of paneling or an armor layer. The pattern need not be dominant at that — often a shade a little lighter or darker than the base coat is enough and the surface stops looking empty at once.
The most common mistake is too great a difference between the base coat and the pattern. The hexagons then look like a sticker and the model loses scale. Instead of another color, try using the same shade with only a different sheen — a flat pattern on a satin base coat is visible under light but does not shout up close. On a model in scale it comes off far more believably.
