Blue, blue-green and violet are among the tones the eye reads as cool and distant. In the package are Phthalo Green, Prussian Blue, Amethyst, Turquoise, Purple and Ultramarine Blue. Together they cover the whole stretch of the color wheel between green and violet, so they can be blended with each other without the risk that the result will gray down.
It is not only about the color of an object. A shadow on a white or gray surface is never merely a darker white; it always has a cast toward blue, and that is exactly what a glaze of ultramarine or Prussian blue suits. Metal in shadow, ice, the depth of water or the cold light of the moon look similar. Amethyst and violet then allow a smooth passage into the warm part of the palette, with no jump.
A heavy coat of these pigments is very saturated, so it pays to work thinned and to build the color in thin coats. Each must dry, otherwise the previous one dissolves and the transition turns hard. For large areas an airbrush is more suitable, for edges and recesses a soft brush.
The Phthalo Green shade is also found in the green set of the same line; the two selections overlap at this point. Anyone planning to get both can count on that in advance.
