Old Red is a muted red from the IONIC range by AMMO of Mig Jimenez. The name points to a red that has been through something: it is duller and less loud than a fresh coat. That is exactly what makes it useful on a model, because bright red areas often look too raw in a small scale and draw more attention to themselves than they should.
It suits fabrics, the cloaks and clothing of figures, weathered finishes, the wooden parts of carts and crates and leather accessories with a reddish cast. It also serves well as a base under a brighter red, because a darker tone underneath evens the surface out and the final coat then need not be so heavy.
Stir the contents of the bottle every time, or the paint will cover unevenly. Use the thinner intended for this range and read the thinning ratio on the packaging. Apply several thin coats and let the surface dry between them. You can support the aged look by lightening the shade slightly on raised edges once dry and darkening it in the folds instead; a red area then looks worn rather than freshly painted. Close the bottle carefully after work so that the paint does not thicken.
