Where ore was hauled, the look of the line itself changed over time as well. Dust from every loading settled on the ballast, on the ties and on the soil around, and the whole neighborhood took on a reddish tone that could not be washed off. This scatter is about precisely that.
Unlike a shaker, a bag has no dispensing sieve, so it is better to pour the material into a dish or into an empty medicine bottle. Spreading straight from an open bag leads to more coming out at once than you wanted, and putting that right can then be done only by suction.
The smaller volume suits exactly this kind of use. An ore area on a layout tends to be small, more a matter of one siding, one bunker and a few meters of track under it, so a large package would stay largely unused.
Scattering around the area has a strong effect. Powder applied with a brush over the surroundings, over the roads and on the roofs of the adjoining buildings joins the scene into a whole, because it shows that the material did not travel only along the track but through the air as well.
Close an opened bag with a clip or pour the content into a resealable container. Spilled fine powder will not come out of a carpet or the gaps of a workbench easily and its red-brown tone is visible on every light surface.
