About product

Italeri BRUSH Round No. 4 - For Areas and Glazes

A round modeling brush from the Italeri brand in size 4, the largest of these four sizes. It is a tool for painting models, not a kit, because the package contains the brush alone, no model and no paints. The number four holds the most paint in its bristles, so you cover an area in few strokes and the coat stays smooth.

Round or flat brush?

A round brush has its bristles drawn into a point, and so it holds a tip even in this size; you can still reach an edge or a corner with it, only now it carries more paint. A flat brush has a straight edge and is better for large flat areas where you want the stroke in one line. The round number four is a practical compromise: it covers an area, yet you do not have to reach for another brush because of the outlines.

What size 4 is good for

  • Larger continuous areas: the bodies of smaller parts, roofs, hoods.
  • Base coats on smaller parts and the ground layer before detail work.
  • Glazes and washes - with a large reserve of paint you spread a glaze over a part in one go before it starts to dry.
  • Applying flat or gloss varnish to smaller areas before decals.

Why size 4 and not size 3

Size 3 has to be dipped more often on an area, and every interruption of a stroke on drying paint means a risk of a visible transition. Size 4 holds more paint and runs across an area smoothly. As soon as you go for detail and smaller parts, though, go back to size 3 or to an even smaller size, because the tip of a number four is coarse for fine work.

Care of the brush

  • Clean it immediately after use with a thinner according to the type of paint (water for acrylics, synthetic thinner for enamels).
  • Do not store the brush point down in thinner or in a jar of water, because the point will bend permanently.
  • Do not press. With larger brushes the temptation to grind the paint into the surface is greatest, but that is exactly what makes the bristles splay.
  • Rinse the paint out of the root of the bristles at the ferrule as well, because with a large brush that is where most of it collects.
  • After cleaning, smooth the point and let it dry lying flat or point upwards.

Who it is for

For modelers who paint by hand and need a brush for areas and base coats, and for those who airbrush and want a comfortable brush for glazes and varnishes.

This is a modeling brush, not a kit. Paints, thinners and the model are not included in the package.

FAQ

Size 4 holds more paint, so you run across an area smoothly and no transitions arise from having had to reload the brush in the middle of a stroke. That makes it more comfortable for areas and glazes.

Yes, that is exactly what it is best at of these four, because a large reserve of paint lets you spread a glaze over a whole part before it starts to dry.

Only to a limited extent. A round tip keeps its point, so you can outline an edge, but for small lettering, buttons or the face of a figure it is too big; size 1 or 2 belongs there.

For large flat areas a flat brush is better, because it lays the paint down in one line. The round number four is more versatile, though, because it covers an area and at the same time manages outlines and corners.
