About product

Lifecolor Light Blue FS35180 Matt

The undersurfaces of a model live in a light world of their own, and a shade behaves differently there than anywhere else. Light Blue FS35180 Matt is a matte acrylic paint from the Lifecolor brand with a matte degree of surface and the number of the American Federal Standard color standard in the name. It is a typical tone for the surfaces that face downward — and that is exactly where it is decided whether the result will look convincing.

Why the underside of a model looks darker than it is

Light comes from above, whether it is the sun or the lighting of a display case. The undersurfaces of a real aircraft are therefore permanently in their own shadow, and a blue-gray tone on them looks appreciably darker than on a sample. On a real machine, though, this darkening is partly evened out by light reflected from the ground and by scattered light from the sky. A model stands on a shelf where there is no sky and the reflection from the base is weak, so the underside goes darker than it should. In practice that means on the undersurfaces you can allow yourself a tone markedly lighter than the one you would choose from a sample, and in small scales this shift is greater still. The test is simple: put the model in the display case, step back and look at it from below at eye level. If the underside merges into darkness, the shade is too low.

How to work with it

  • A matte light blue with the Federal Standard number given in the name.
  • For the undersurfaces choose a tone on the lighter side; that makes up for the missing reflected light.
  • Check the model from below at eye level, not from above at the bench.
  • In a small scale, soften the sharp transition to the upper surfaces, or it looks like a drawn line.
  • In 1:72 and smaller scales the shift needed is the greatest.

Who it is for

For builders of aircraft who are dealing with undersurfaces and interiors, and for modelers of military vehicles looking for a cool light tone for their palette.

Keep out of the reach of children. When spraying, work in a well-ventilated space.

FAQ

Light comes from above, so the underside is permanently in its own shadow. On a real machine that is evened out by reflection from the ground and by scattered light from the sky, but on a shelf in a display case nothing like that works.

Yes, on the undersurfaces a shift upward is right. In 1:72 and smaller scales it is the greatest; in large scales a slight one is enough.

Put the model in the display case and look at it from below at eye level, the way a visitor will see it. If the underside merges into darkness, the shade is too low.

In a small scale a sharp transition looks like a drawn line. It pays to soften it slightly, so that the boundary does not look harder than the viewing distance would warrant on a real machine.
