Gloss black FS17038 and its place in painting vehicles

A gloss black will never become a field of a camouflage scheme, and for a very practical reason: gloss reflects light and camouflage has precisely the opposite task. The dark field in multi-color schemes therefore always carries a matte black. The gloss version does have a firm place in the sequence of painting a vehicle, just somewhere other than on the camouflage. The name of the color gives the number of the American Federal Standard color standard FS17038 and the gloss sheen level.

Where you will use it on a vehicle

• On smooth painted details, which stand out from a camouflaged surface on real vehicles too.
• As a smooth base in places where decals are going, because they settle better on a gloss surface than on a matte one.
• On headlight lenses, optics and rubber features that should have a different character from the surrounding surface.
• On civil and service vehicles and on accessories in a diorama, where gloss is wanted.

The difference from matte black

When you build a vehicle in a three-field scheme, apply the dark field in matte black and keep this gloss one for the detail. Mixing the two up is one of the most frequent reasons a finished model looks different from the real subject even though the shade is right.
