Forest floor base, blueberry patch — MINIPACK Model Scene

A blueberry patch is the typical undergrowth of coniferous forests on acid soils — a continuous low carpet of dwarf shrubs that covers the forest floor between the trunks and spreads out to the edges of tracks and forest cuts. This product is finished growth that imitates such a surface: all you need to do is lay it down and glue it, with nothing to assemble and nothing to paint. MINIPACK is the smaller package from the manufacturer's range of finished growths. The manufacturer is the Czech brand Model Scene.

Why blueberry works in a diorama

Undergrowth with blueberry gives a forest scene a character that grass alone cannot manage — it is denser, small-leaved and forms a continuous surface with a fine texture. A viewer immediately assigns it to a spruce or pine forest, so a single material sets the type of landscape. It also comes into its own where you need to cover the transition between the terrain and the trunk of a tree, or between a slope and a track. In color it is a richer, darker green that works as a counterweight to lighter grass and moss.

Usage tips

• Tear the growth into irregular islands, as a continuous rectangle never looks natural.
• Glue with PVA glue and fill the gaps with a moss scatter and fallen litter.
• Place the densest areas in half-shade under the trees and thin the growth out toward a track.
• Always break up the transitions to the surrounding terrain with a fine scatter.
• Add stumps, fallen branches and needles — a forest is never tidy.
