About product

Frame Dirt — a coat of grime on the frame and the underside

This Lifecolor shade from the Liquid Pigments Washes range is a liquid pigment intended for settled service grime: for the frames of carriages, for chassis, for lower edges and for all the places dirt reaches and never leaves again. The pigment is mixed into a carrier fluid and once dry it stays on the surface as a deposit that can be strengthened or partly wiped off.

Gravity sets the direction of application

After shaking, lay it on in vertical strokes from the top down and let the pigment run along the edges and the projections. Wipe vertically too and only lightly, so that uneven streaks remain — it is precisely those that make the grime believable. Horizontal surfaces, by contrast, should be left dirtier, because a deposit holds on them best.

Repeat on the places that catch the dirt. Around bolts, hinges, welds and in corners lay a second and a third layer on, and leave open areas weaker. The difference between the dirtied and the cleaner places is exactly what sets a model apart from an evenly soiled toy.

Against a classic wash

In this case a wash would bring out mainly the outlines of the parts and leave the face alone. A liquid pigment, by contrast, covers the face and once dry can still be rubbed out or softened, so what you model with it is the amount of grime, not the drawing of the detail.

Use

  • The frames and chassis of railway carriages and trucks.
  • The lower areas of vehicles, fenders and the insides of wheel wells.
  • Around connecting elements and places where grease and dust hold.
  • A base under further weathering steps, for example dry pigments.

Who the color is for

For modelers of railways, vehicles and trucks who want service wear instead of a clean display case. The use is simple; the only harder part is restraint — less tends to be better.

Keep out of the reach of children. Stir the contents before every use and close the bottle carefully. Check the strength of the effect on a test piece first.

FAQ

Because the marks from the brush and from the wiping stay visible. When they follow the direction dirt really runs, the result looks natural.

No. The corners, the areas around bolts and hinges and the horizontal surfaces should be dirtier. Leave open vertical areas weaker; contrast is what you want here.

Yes, further weathering steps are commonly built on such a base. Do let the previous layer dry undisturbed, though.
