About product

Blue Burned Exhaust — the bluish cast of red-hot metal

Metal exposed to high temperature colors toward blue, and it is exactly this phenomenon that this Lifecolor shade from the Liquid Pigments Washes range imitates. It is a liquid pigment that once dry leaves a fine colored deposit on the surface; the strength of the effect is set by the number of layers, not by one heavy application.

The transition is built, not painted

After shaking thoroughly, lay a very small amount on the place where the coloring is to be strongest, usually closer to the muzzle or to a joint. Before the coat dries, rub it out with a dry soft brush away from there, to nothing. Then leave the surface alone and repeat the whole procedure — only the second and third layers give the color saturation while keeping a smooth transition.

Do not make a continuous band. Real coloring is not even: it changes with the thickness of the material and tends to be stronger in bands. Irregularity is what you want here and it sets a model apart from a toy.

Why not a wash

A wash would flow into the recesses and bring out the drawing of the welds, but it will not color an area. A liquid pigment holds on the face and can be rubbed out, so a smooth color transition can be modeled with it — exactly what heat-loaded metal needs.

Use

  • Exhausts and exhaust piping of radial and inline engines.
  • The area around the outlets and nozzles of jet engines.
  • Gun barrels, mufflers and the heat-loaded metal parts of vehicles.
  • Bluish transitions on motorcycle exhausts and rail vehicles.

Who the color is for

For modelers who deal with metal surfaces and want to set them apart from their surroundings without an airbrush. The effect is specific, but details of this type tend to be exactly what everyone notices on a finished model.

Keep out of the reach of children. Stir the contents before every use and close the bottle carefully. Try the strength and the color out on a test piece with a similar base.

FAQ

Usually two to three very thin ones. One heavy application makes a patch with a sharp edge, whereas layering gives both saturation and a smooth transition.

Where the metal was loaded with heat the most, that is, usually closer to the muzzle or to a joint. Away from there the color should fade.

It pays to have a finished metal surface under it that you are used to. Always check how the effect behaves on a particular base off the model, though.
