Light gray is the color of newly hauled ballast. Granite or basalt just tipped out of a quarry has a sharp, light fracture, it reflects daylight and separates itself from the terrain around in a pronounced band. Only traffic, oil and grease from bearings pull it into darker tones over a few seasons. On a model that can be used in two ways: either a line is built that has just been repaired, with a clearly legible boundary between the new and the old stretch, or light stone is laid as a base and shaded with pigments to any stage of aging.
The grain size corresponds to the coarsest of the three offered. Besides the ballast of large scales it suits scenes where stone is meant to be seen as stone: the floor of a quarry, a crusher with belt conveyors, a firmed-up surface under a crane, the bank of a channelized stream or riprap around a bridge pier. In a military diorama it serves as broken-up macadam under a damaged road.
The procedure for applying it is simple and it forgives mistakes. Dry stone is poured out, leveled to shape and only then fixed. It is a good idea to work in smaller stretches, because material that has been wetted can no longer be leveled again without lifting in whole slabs. Once it is dry, the excess is sucked off with a vacuum cleaner through a piece of stocking.
Light stone has one more practical advantage. On a dark base it is easy to tell where the material has already reached and where it is missing, so the profile is leveled more easily than with dark shades. Anyone who wants to be sure first spreads a short test stretch at the edge of the board, lets it harden and only then decides how to go on.
