About product

AK interactive Masking Tape: 2 mm — a Narrow Masking Tape, 20 m Roll

A masking tape from AK interactive in a 2 mm width with a 20 m roll. The carrier is rice paper (a washi-type paper tape), so it can be torn or cut with a knife and conforms well to a surface. This is a modeling aid, not a kit.

Compared with ordinary office or painter's tape, it has three key differences: low, controlled tack — it will not pull off dried paint or a primer when removed; a sharply cut edge, which seals tightly once pressed down and does not let paint creep underneath; and an adhesive that leaves no residue, so no sticky film remains after removal that would need cleaning with thinner.

When to reach for 2 mm specifically

The two-millimeter width is the narrowest in the series, and it exists for one reason: a narrow strip can bend around a curve. When you try to follow the same curve with a wide tape, it breaks, wrinkles and buckles on the outer edge — and every wrinkle becomes a channel for paint to creep under. A narrow tape wraps around a curve smoothly. It is therefore used for curved camouflage demarcation lines, canopy frames, thin edges, outlines, and anywhere a line is curved or very fine. For covering an area, 2 mm is impractical — fill the area with the medium 12 mm width, and with the wide 18 mm for large areas. The usual method: shape the precise outline with the narrow tape, then cover the rest of the area with wider tape or paper.

Use

  • Curved and wavy camouflage demarcation lines on aircraft and vehicles.
  • Cockpit frames and glazing, thin edges and stripes.
  • Precisely shaping an outline that is then covered with wider tape.
  • Masking small details before airbrushing.

Who it is for

For modelers who airbrush and need clean color transitions — especially for camouflage with soft but deliberate edges. Without a narrow tape, curves are hard to mask.

Press the tape down along the whole length of the edge and apply the paint in thin coats perpendicular to the edge — this limits creeping underneath. Remove it slowly, at a sharp angle.

FAQ

Because of curves. A narrow strip can bend into a curve without wrinkling. Wide tape breaks and wrinkles on a curve, and each wrinkle becomes a gap for paint to creep under. For straight lines and areas, the 12 mm or 18 mm width is more practical instead.

It has low, controlled tack, so it will not pull off dried paint or a primer when removed, the edge is sharply cut, and no adhesive residue remains after removal. Ordinary tape guarantees none of that, and its edge tends to be frayed.

Press the tape down firmly along the whole edge, spray thin coats, and direct the paint spray more perpendicular to the edge than under it. It also helps to first oversprray the edge with a thin coat of the base color, so any seepage is hidden.

Yes, the paper carrier can be cut easily with a hobby knife along a ruler, or with scissors.
