About product

MATT LUCKY VARNISH (17 ml) — AMMO of Mig Jimenez

A clear matte acrylic varnish (water-thinnable) in a 17 ml dropper bottle. It is used to give a finished model its final matte finish. This is not a paint or a kit — the varnish is transparent, has no covering power at all, and will not change the shade underneath it; it only adjusts the surface's gloss. The manufacturer states that the varnish does not yellow and does not affect the colors underneath. It is applied with a brush or an airbrush, even straight from the bottle without thinning; it can be thinned and cleaned with acrylic thinner or water. Full curing takes about 24 hours.

Order of Work — When to Use the Matte Varnish

A matte varnish is the last layer, never the first. The usual sequence is: paint → gloss varnish under decals (decals do not silver on a gloss surface, since no air pockets form under the carrier film) → decals → washes and filters → a final varnish depending on the desired look. Choose the matte version when you want a deep, perfectly matte surface: military equipment, tanks, artillery, aircraft or figures. If the surface should only be softened and naturally silky, reach for the satin version instead — real equipment tends to be slightly satin more often than perfectly matte, so satin often looks more realistic.

Use

  • A final matte topcoat on a finished model after decals, washes and filters.
  • Unifying the gloss where matte and gloss paints meet.
  • Matting down a gloss varnish that was applied under decals.
  • Preparing a base for pigments — dust and grime hold better on a matte surface.

Application tips

Apply it in thin coats. A coat that is too thick or too wet can turn whitish and powdery (a white haze over the paint) — two thin coats with a pause between them are better than one heavy one. Shake the bottle thoroughly before use, since the flattening agent settles to the bottom. Spray with short, light passes from a distance with an airbrush, not a wet coat.

Who it is for

For modelers of military equipment, aircraft and figures who want to finish a model with a genuinely matte surface, and for anyone who needs to unify uneven gloss before applying pigments.

Safety: an acrylic, water-thinnable product — the manufacturer describes it as non-toxic and odorless. Even so, ensure good ventilation and protect your airways when airbrushing (the sprayed mist should not be inhaled). Keep out of the reach of children.

FAQ

It is not a paint. It is a clear varnish with no covering power — the shade underneath stays the same, only the surface gloss changes to matte.

No, a gloss varnish belongs under decals. On a matte surface, air pockets form under the decal's carrier film and it silvers. Apply the matte varnish only as the final layer, after decals and washes.

Typically from a coat that was too thick or too wet, or from high humidity while it dried. The flattening agent precipitates on the surface and forms a white haze. The fix is to apply thin coats with a pause between them and shake the bottle well before use.

Matte gives a deep matte finish, suited to military equipment and figures. Satin sits between matte and gloss and often looks more realistic for worn equipment, leather, wood and many aircraft finishes, since real surfaces are rarely perfectly matte.
