A four by four square gives sixteen positions, each shaped for a 25 mm base. It is the classic block format: the unit has a frontage as wide as it is deep, and its footprint does not change when it turns, which simplifies both measuring and taking up space on the table.
A symmetrical footprint has a practical consequence at the table. The block can be turned a quarter turn without changing the area it takes up, so the player does not have to recalculate whether the unit still fits between two buildings. Distances are measured from the edge of the tray, and because all four sides are the same, the measurement comes out the same from every direction. A square also looks good when a whole army is drawn up and the blocks are lined up in regular ranks.
For players of battle games with larger units on 25 mm bases and for collectors who want a numerous group of figures arranged in a regular grid away from the game as well. If you are building an army gradually, the square block tends to be the first tray worth buying, because most formations are built around it.
