Medium Decoupage - Satin is a medium from the Green Stuff World line intended to imitate water. The word Satin in the name describes the resulting surface: a silky, subdued sheen between full gloss and matte. It is an all-purpose choice, because water on a diorama rarely has a mirror surface, and a completely dead matte one does not read well either.
How the medium is handled. A water surface is built up gradually. The medium is applied in several steps and the next layer comes only when the previous one has cured right through, not merely on the surface. Paint the bed and the banks beforehand and seal the edges of the channel so that the medium does not run outside the scene. Set the base level while it dries, otherwise the water will tilt. The color depth of the water comes from a painted bed, not from the finished surface.
The surface and waves. A still surface comes about by letting the last layer level itself. Draw ripples, a wake behind a hull or rings around an obstacle out of the surface layer once it has set up, using a toothpick, a skewer or a stiff brush. A satin surface subdues the highlight, so make the relief of a wave rather more pronounced than would be enough with the gloss variant.
For builders of dioramas, railroad modules and gaming bases looking for a naturally appearing water surface without sharp highlights. It serves well on river scenes, harbors and smaller pools.
Before use, follow the manufacturer's instructions on the packaging and work in a ventilated room.
