A hand modeling file from the Japanese brand Mineshima with a triangular section to its working part. Like the other types of the Medium series it is intended for the middle coarseness of work, that is, for the stage when the coarse sprue gate is already gone and shaping and evening out is needed.
What a triangular section is for
A triangle has three working faces and above all three sharp edges that converge at an angle smaller than a right angle. That is the only shape that reaches into a sharp inner corner without rounding off its apex. Typically this means the inner angles of cutouts, the recesses of landing gear bays, the junctions of ribs and spars, and places where two surfaces meet at a sharp angle. The edge of the file can also be run along an engraved line to open it up where putty or a thick coat of paint has filled it in.
A triangular file bites very quickly with its sharp edge, so work in short strokes and with little pressure. Do not force the tip into the blind end of a corner, because it digs in easily and makes a groove in the plastic that you then have to fill. Clean the teeth with a brush as you go and finish the surface with a finer abrasive, so that no visible mark stays under the paint after filing.
For builders of plastic kits who get down to details and need clean inner edges. It makes sense as a way to complete a set of files with a section the flat and round types cannot replace.
