A small vise is a tool that takes up a few centimeters on the bench and saves a great deal of spoiled work. Small parts that twist and fly out of your fingers sit firmly in it and you have both hands for the tool. According to the name it is a 2-in-1 version, that is, an aid with two ways of using it; exactly what the pair involves is given on the box.

Field of use

The classic stage is preparing parts. Cleaning up parting seams, filing shapes, drilling holes for tubing and handles, carefully dividing a part with a saw. A vise also suits gluing, when a joint should stay still until the glue has set, and painting, because a clamped part can be sprayed and left to dry without your touching it with your fingers. What to watch out for

• Clamp a surface that will not be seen, or a part painted last.
• Tighten with care; thin-walled plastic and resin take only a little pressure.
• When drilling, hold the bit at right angles and without pressure, as thin bits snap easily in plastic.
• Keep the jaws clear of swarf and dried paint.
• Work over a surface; a small part that jumps out of a vise is hard to find on the floor.
