Six lacquer shades for Romanian combat aircraft of today. It contains three gray layers of the multirole fighters, the color of the radome and two tones intended for the upgraded interceptors.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Romanian Air Force went through an unusual transformation after 2000. First it had an Israeli company rebuild older Soviet MiG-21s into the LanceR version, which was given modern avionics, Western armament and new light coats along with it. The LanceR C interceptor variant wore a combination of a very light gray on the upper surfaces and a greenish blue tone on the underside, which was a fairly unusual look for an Eastern European machine. From 2016 they were joined by used F-16A and B in the Block 20 MLU standard, which arrived in the usual American three-gray scheme. The set covers both of these layers at once.
The logic with which the set is put together is interesting. The three gray shades are not three different colors of the scheme, but three stages of the same coat according to age and wear. A modeler can therefore show a freshly repainted panel next to an area faded by the sun on a single machine, which on modern aircraft makes up the largest part of the final impression.
A lacquer base is an advantage here, because it allows fine transitions to be sprayed in layers without the risk that the color underneath will dissolve.
Anyone who wants to go into detail can pick out individual panels on the wings with a barely perceptible change of shade. On modern machines it is exactly this irregularity that sets a model apart from a toy.
