The autumn color version of the finished model larch from the Czech manufacturer Model Scene. The tree is made by hand and foliated, with no assembling and no painting — it is planted straight into a diorama. The stated size of 280 to 320 mm is the tolerance of handmade production, so every piece has its own shape of crown and branching.

The real subject

The larch is a deciduous conifer, and that is exactly what makes it valuable for autumn scenes. While the surrounding spruces and pines stay dark green, the larch turns a rich golden-yellow to ocher for a few weeks and creates a striking color accent in a stand. Shortly afterwards the needles fall and the tree stays bare through the winter. The model captures precisely the phase of full autumn color.

Use in a scene

An autumn larch is ideal for scenes from the end of the season — mountain and foothill lines, forest tracks, the edges of cut areas, scenes from October and November. It works best in a group with dark green conifers, because the contrast of the two colors makes the stand readable. Plant the tree into a pre-drilled hole and secure it with cyanoacrylate or hot glue. Sprinkle a little dry leaf and needle litter in a matching shade under the crown, and add turf and dry static grass — fallen material around the foot of the trunk is the detail that sells an autumn scene more than the tree itself.
