Larch with a tall trunk, 280 to 320 mm (Model Scene)

A finished model tree from the Czech diorama vegetation manufacturer Model Scene. It is not a kit and not a loose material — the tree is made by hand, foliated and ready to be planted into a scene. The stated size of 280 to 320 mm is a spread given by the handmade production, so every piece is an original and the trees do not repeat one another in a stand.

The real subject

The larch is the only common European conifer that sheds its needles for the winter. It grows in mountain and foothill positions, and in a mature forest stand it develops a long trunk, branchless at the bottom, with the crown set high — exactly the habit the model captures. The summer foliage is a fresh green, with the fine texture of short soft needles and the pattern of the branches showing through.

Use in a scene

A tall trunk makes the tree a rewarding element of forest and mountain scenes, the edges of tracks, slopes above railroad cuttings and a tall focal point behind a building. Plant it into a pre-drilled hole in the base and secure it with cyanoacrylate or hot glue. With taller pieces it pays to sink the trunk deeper or to weight the base underneath, so that the scene stays stable. Cover the transition from trunk to terrain with turf, static grass and sprinkled needles, so that the tree does not look stuck in. A discreet touch of dark pigment at the foot of the trunk blends the tree with the surrounding soil.
