About product

Tank Grey RAL 7021 — Mr.Paint Acrylic Modeling Paint (Aqua Range, 17 ml)

Tank Grey RAL 7021, in German Dunkelgrau and known among modelers as panzergrau, is a very dark neutral gray. It is a water-thinnable acrylic paint from the Aqua range by the Slovak manufacturer Mr.Paint, in a 17 ml dropper bottle. It is made for both brush and airbrush and works best applied straight from the bottle, with no thinning. It is thinned with water, or with acrylic thinner from the same range — never with nitro or lacquer thinner. Once dry, it holds a durable, well-adhering film that tolerates masking tape.

Why This Shade Is Key

RAL 7021 was the base shade of early Second World War German armored equipment. Vehicles were supplied in a uniform dark gray finish, used until 1943 — only then was it replaced as the new factory base by the dark yellow Dunkelgelb RAL 7028, over which a three-color camouflage was then sprayed. In practice this means one thing: anyone building an early German tank — a Panzer III, Panzer IV or StuG from the period up to 1943 — needs exactly this shade. The manufacturer lists the same RAL in its range made for German armored equipment.

Watch the period. For equipment from 1943 to 1945, panzergrau is no longer correct — there you need the dark yellow Dunkelgelb RAL 7028, along with the olive green Olivgrün RAL 6003 and the red-brown Rotbraun RAL 8017. The shades of the two periods are not interchangeable.

Use and Painting Tips

  • The base coat for German armored vehicles, self-propelled guns and vehicles of the early war period.
  • A dark neutral gray for equipment, gun carriages and metal parts per the RAL standard.
  • A dark base for shading and pre-shading of panels.
  • Combined with a suitable varnish and washes for a contrasting patina.

Practical tip: panzergrau is very dark — at scale it absorbs light, and the model can end up looking like a black blob with no detail. It is therefore commonly lightened and modulated: spray the base as it is, then lighten the shade in a palette with a drop of white or light gray and spray the lightened mix over upward-facing areas — the top armor, hatches, the tops of fenders. Leave the lower parts dark. This gives the model volume and depth.

Who It Is For

For builders of early Second World War German armored equipment, and for anyone who wants a very dark neutral gray to a RAL standard in a water-thinnable acrylic.

A modeling paint, not a kit. Keep out of the reach of children and close the bottle carefully after use. Work in a ventilated room and use a respirator when airbrushing — do not inhale the atomized paint.

FAQ

German armored equipment of the early Second World War — Panzer III, Panzer IV, StuG and other vehicles up to 1943, when dark gray RAL 7021 was the factory base color. From 1943 onward, the base became the dark yellow Dunkelgelb RAL 7028.

You should not. From 1943, German armored equipment was supplied in the dark yellow Dunkelgelb RAL 7028, over which camouflage in olive green Olivgrün RAL 6003 and red-brown Rotbraun RAL 8017 was sprayed. Panzergrau belongs to the earlier period and would be a mistake on a late-war tank.

Panzergrau really is very dark and absorbs both light and detail at small scale. That is why it is commonly modulated: lighten the shade with a drop of white or light gray and spray the lighter mix over the upper surfaces, leaving the lower ones dark. This gives the model volume.

It is an acrylic from the water-thinnable Aqua range, so water or acrylic thinner from the same range. Lacquer or nitro thinner does not belong with it. Usually you will not need to thin it at all — the paint is ready to spray straight from the bottle.
