About product

Mr.Paint 4BO — 1941 Russian Green (Aqua Acrylic, 17 ml)

A modeling paint, not a kit. A water-thinnable acrylic from the Slovak brand Mr.Paint, Aqua range, in a 17 ml bottle, for both airbrush and brush. 4BO is the base protective green of Soviet military equipment in the Second World War — no Soviet tank is built without it.

What 4BO Is and What 1941 Means

Protective green 4BO covered the vast majority of Soviet equipment: T-34 and KV tanks, self-propelled guns, artillery and cargo vehicles. It was not one unchanging shade, though — the paint was produced in many plants, raw-material quality fluctuated during the war, and the result varied from batch to batch. The designation 1941 therefore refers to a period variant of the shade: Mr.Paint offers 4BO in two versions, an early wartime one and a later postwar one, so a modeler can choose based on the period of their subject. This bottle is the early, wartime variant.

Use

  • Thinned with water or acrylic thinner from the Aqua range — it is not a lacquer, and nitro thinner is not needed.
  • Airbrush and brush; apply in thin coats over a cured primer.
  • The satin surface tolerates direct application of decals, washes and filters.
  • For a lively tank, break up the surface once dry with modulation, dust pigments and mud effects on the running gear.
  • Shake the bottle thoroughly before use.

Who the Paint Is For

For builders of Soviet combat equipment from 1941–1945 in any scale. Watch out for confusion: the brand's range also includes Soviet Protective Green KhV-518. Although it is also a Soviet protective green, it is not the same thing — KhV-518 is a newer finish associated with postwar T-54 to T-72 tanks. For Second World War equipment, reach for 4BO; for Cold War tanks, for KhV-518. A later version of 4BO itself also exists for postwar equipment.

A modeling paint in a 17 ml bottle. The kit, glue and thinner are not included in the package. Work in a ventilated room, use respiratory protection when spraying. Keep out of the reach of children.

FAQ

It is a water-thinnable acrylic from the Aqua range, suited to both brush and airbrush. Mr.Paint's main range is lacquers thinned with nitro thinner — this paint does not belong to that group.

4BO is the protective green of Soviet Second World War equipment (T-34, KV, guns, vehicles). KhV-518 is a different, newer finish the manufacturer associates with postwar T-54 through T-72 tanks. So go by the period of your subject: wartime = 4BO, Cold War = KhV-518.

It denotes the period variant of the shade. The manufacturer offers 4BO in two versions — an early wartime one and a later postwar one — since 4BO was not a single unchanging shade. This paint is the early one.

No. 4BO is a ground-equipment green. Soviet aircraft had their own upper-surface and interior shades that do not overlap with 4BO.
