About product

Mr.Paint RLM 23 Rot, an acrylic modeling paint

A water-thinnable acrylic paint from the Slovak manufacturer Mr.Paint in the Aqua acrylic line. It is a modeling paint, not a kit, and the package holds only the paint in a dropper bottle. While the main Mr.Paint line is a lacquer thinned with cellulose thinner and is sprayed with an airbrush only, the Aqua line is a water-thinnable acrylic, can be applied with a brush and with an airbrush, and is cleaned up with water or with the same manufacturer's acrylic thinner.

What the RLM 23 shade is for

RLM 23 Rot is the red of the identification and tactical markings of the Luftwaffe, that is a marking color rather than a camouflage shade. It comes into use on colored marking elements, on small accessories and anywhere a model needs a saturated period red. The exact extent of its use differed from one machine and unit to another, so always follow the scheme supplied with the kit.

Use and tips

  • Red covers very poorly and without a light undercoat it comes out brownish. Apply it over a white or light gray base and build the color up in several thin coats.
  • With an airbrush it usually sprays straight from the bottle; depending on the nozzle and the pressure it can be thinned further with Mr.Paint acrylic thinner or with water.
  • A brush suits small marking elements, an airbrush the larger areas.
  • Apply masking tape only to paint that is perfectly dry, as fresh acrylic is easily pulled off.
  • Shake the bottle thoroughly before use, as the pigment settles to the bottom.

Who the paint is for

For modelers of German Second World War aircraft who are finishing colored markings, and for anyone looking for a saturated modeling red that works with a brush and in an airbrush. It goes well with the other marking shades and camouflage colors of the same line.

A water-thinnable acrylic, so flammability and odor are markedly lower than with lacquer paints. Even so, ventilate and protect your airways when spraying with an airbrush, as the paint aerosol should not be inhaled. Protect from frost.

FAQ

It is an acrylic. This shade belongs to the Aqua acrylic line from Mr.Paint and is thinned with water or with the same manufacturer's acrylic thinner. It is not a cellulose lacquer paint from the main Mr.Paint line and must not be thinned with lacquer thinner.

Red pigments have very low covering power. Spray a white or light gray undercoat first and only then build the red up over it in several thin coats. Straight onto dark plastic or a dark base, red always turns brown.

It is not. RLM 23 Rot is the color of markings and identification elements, not a camouflage shade for upper or lower surfaces. For camouflage you need other shades of the RLM range.

Yes. The Aqua acrylic line is intended for brush and airbrush alike, which is the difference from the Mr.Paint lacquer line, which is for the airbrush only. A brush is quite enough for small markings.
