About product

Mr.Paint RLM 24 Dunkelblau — Acrylic Modeling Paint

A water-thinnable acrylic paint from the Slovak manufacturer Mr.Paint, from the acrylic Aqua range. This is a modeling paint, not a kit — the package contains only the paint in a dropper bottle. Mr.Paint's main range is lacquer (nitro) based and made only for an airbrush; the Aqua range, by contrast, is a water-thinnable acrylic that can be applied with both brush and airbrush, is practically odorless, and is cleaned with water or the same manufacturer's acrylic thinner.

What the RLM 24 Shade Is For

RLM 24 Dunkelblau is a dark blue used for identification markings and accent elements on German aircraft; in period use it also marked oxygen equipment. It is therefore a marking color, not a camouflage shade. Do not confuse it with RLM 65 Hellblau — that is the light blue of the undersides, a completely different, much lighter shade. Mixing them up means spraying the entire underside of an aircraft in a rich dark blue.

Use and Tips

  • With an airbrush it is usually sprayed straight from the bottle; depending on the nozzle and pressure, it can be further thinned with Mr.Paint acrylic thinner or water.
  • Dark blue holds well even over a gray base; for maximum richness, use a neutral gray primer.
  • A brush suits small marking elements, accessories and detail; an airbrush suits areas.
  • Apply masking tape only onto fully dried paint — fresh acrylic lifts easily.
  • Shake the bottle thoroughly before use — the pigment settles to the bottom.

Who the Paint Is For

For modelers of German Second World War aircraft finishing color markings and details, and for anyone looking for a rich dark blue usable with both brush and airbrush. It complements other marking shades and camouflage colors in the same range.

A water-thinnable acrylic — flammability and odor are considerably lower than with lacquer paints. Even so, ventilate and protect your airways when airbrushing; the paint's aerosol should not be inhaled. Protect from frost.

FAQ

It is acrylic. The shade belongs to Mr.Paint's acrylic Aqua range — thinned with water or acrylic thinner from the same manufacturer. It is not a lacquer (nitro) paint from Mr.Paint's main range.

No. The undersides of early German aircraft carried the light blue RLM 65 Hellblau. RLM 24 Dunkelblau is a rich dark blue used for markings and accents — these are completely different shades and cannot be substituted for each other.

Yes. The acrylic Aqua range is made for both brush and airbrush, unlike Mr.Paint's lacquer range, which is airbrush-only. A brush is perfectly adequate for small markings and detail.

Usually no — the paint typically sprays straight from the bottle. If you need to thin it, use Mr.Paint acrylic thinner or water. Do not use lacquer (nitro) thinner as a standard practice with this acrylic range.
