Not every rock on a model is meant to be a face. Far more often stone comes out of the ground only in part, in a place where a road has cut a slope away, where an embankment has settled or where water has carried the soil off the edge of a ditch. The package is built for precisely these small outcroppings.
The package holds thirteen pieces with a length of 2.5 to 8.9 cm and a height of 2.5 to 4.8 cm. The spread of sizes is deliberate: the larger pieces form the skeleton of an outcropping, while the smaller ones are set around it, so that the edge does not look like a single solitary boulder laid on the grass.
An outcropping looks believable only when it is partly sunk in. It is therefore a good idea to hollow out a shallow bed under a casting and to fill the lower edge with stone or soil, so that the transition between the rock and the terrain is not visible. The layers within the pattern are worth turning the same way on neighboring pieces, because geological layering is continuous in reality and a turned block catches the eye.
The castings are toned by hand, so they differ slightly in color from piece to piece and no pair looks like a copy. Anyone who wants to go further can bring out the edges with a dry brush or deepen the crevices with a darker glaze; the basic coloring, though, is finished and usable straight out of the package.
Thirteen pieces are enough for several separate spots, not for one large one. It is sensible to divide them into two or three groups and to leave the terrain clear between them, because stone comes through a landscape irregularly and scattering them evenly over a whole board looks like a sprinkling, not like geology.
They work well beside flat river stones as well as beside larger blocks: in nature a small fragment most often lies exactly below the coarser formation it broke off from.
