A paint rack of dark plywood measuring 34x24x25 cm, shaped for bottles from GSI and Tamiya.

Paints have a persistent ability to multiply. First there are five, then twenty, and in the end they stand on the bench top in several layers deep, so that hunting for a particular shade knocks over every second bottle. A stepped rack is the answer to exactly that state: each row is a little higher than the one in front of it, so all the caps are visible at once.
This version is of dark plywood and its footprint and height match dimensions of 34x24x25 cm. The recesses are matched to the diameter of GSI and Tamiya bottles, the two most widespread systems of modeling paints for aircraft and military models. The dark shade of the wood has a practical advantage the light version does not: against a dark background the colored labels and the shades in the bottles themselves are easier to read and the eye finds them faster.
The rack comes as a solid piece of bench furniture, not as a model kit, so once it is unpacked all you have to do is find a place for it. It pays to stand it so that the light falls from above and in front; then the paint in a bottle can be judged without taking it out of the rack.
Anyone mixing paints from several systems will appreciate that the dark and light versions, and the versions for other paint brands, look like one set on the bench.
A container of a different height can be put into a row without trouble; you just have to expect it to hide part of the row behind it. The rack is of most use to anyone who returns again and again to the same palette of shades and looks for them by the cap.
