A polystyrene sheet 150 x 300 mm and 0.75 mm thick with dense vertical grooving at a 0.64 mm spacing. The finest grid of the whole group of siding sheets, drawn from the side of a passenger railroad car.
Responsibility details are not available.
A sheet of white polystyrene seventy-five hundredths of a millimeter thick carries parallel grooves across its whole surface, with sixty-four hundredths of a millimeter left between them. Across the width of the fifteen-centimeter sheet there are therefore about two hundred and thirty of them. The model was the side of a passenger railroad car, where the vertical battens are narrow and the shadow between them barely perceptible.
Polystyrene is not cut all the way through. A scribing point is led in several light strokes along one and the same track, and once the groove reaches about a third of the thickness the material is snapped over the edge of a table. Trying to get through with a knife in one pass ends with the blade wandering and a beveled edge. With a grid this fine there is one further advantage: if the track is laid exactly in the bottom of one of the grooves, the break disappears into a line that is supposed to be on the finished part anyway. A cut across the grooves, by contrast, leaves a ragged profile that has to be leveled with sandpaper backed by a hard block.
In 1:87 scale the spacing corresponds to a board just under six centimeters wide, in 1:120 to something over seven and in 1:160 to almost ten. It therefore suits small structures and vehicles in small scales, the cladding of cab interiors, door panels and the walls of shelters, where a coarser groove would look oversized. A thickness of three quarters of a millimeter holds the plane without support and can still be divided comfortably.
The material is identical with the styrene of injection-molded kits, so it takes the same glue, the same putty and the same paint.
