A plastic sheet 3 mm thick in B4 format, that is roughly 364 x 257 millimeters, packed one piece to a pack. Unlike the thin plastic films and cards used for skins and patches, this sheet is a structural material: it holds its shape, does not warp and carries further construction on top of it. It is used wherever you need a flat, rigid base or a thick wall that thin plastic could not keep straight.
Do not cut a thick sheet in one pass. Score it repeatedly along a ruler with a sharp knife until the groove is deep enough, and then snap it over the edge of the table; alternatively use a fine saw. Then true the cut with a file or abrasive paper on a flat board, otherwise the edges will not mate. For gluing thick parts, plastic cement run into the joint with the joint held for a while works well; for loaded joints super glue or two-part epoxy is better. Degrease the surface before painting and spray a primer, as on large areas the paint otherwise holds less well. It is good to edge a diorama base with a strip all the way around, which covers both the cut and any bowing.
For modelers who build dioramas, buildings and their own parts and need a material that behaves predictably and can be worked with ordinary modeling tools.
When cutting and sanding work over a mat, guide the knife away from your body and do not breathe in the plastic dust.
