Bases are a modeling supply, not a kit. The oval format measuring 90 x 52 millimeters is among the larger sizes used in tabletop wargames, where it serves bulkier figures, cavalry, vehicles and large monsters. A base does three jobs at once: it gives a figure stability, protects it while being handled on the playing surface and unifies the look of a whole collection. The number of pieces in the package, the thickness of the material and the color of the plastic are given on the packaging.
Bare plastic is only a starting point. The surface of a base is usually roughened first with fine abrasive paper, so that it holds glue and primer better. Terrain work is done with texture paste, fine sand and grit; once dry, the area is primed, painted in a base color and lightened with a dry brush. Static grass, small stones or cut-outs from resin accessories add detail. It pays off to paint the edge of the base in one dark color across the whole collection, because a uniform rim is what looks tidiest on the table. If you transport an army, a steel plate or a magnet can be glued into the underside.
The bases are supplied unpainted and without any terrain finish. Figures, paints, glue and texture materials are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
