Unlike a square or a circle, a rectangular base is not the same from every side. It has a short side of fifty millimeters and a long side of one hundred millimeters, so turning the model is a gaming decision: facing front, the model takes up a narrow strip and passes a gap between terrain more easily, while turned side on it occupies twice the width and blocks the way. The two to one ratio also matches the shape of long models such as vehicles, horse teams or elongated machines, which a round base does not fit. That is exactly why a rectangle is used where it should be clear which way a model is heading.
