About product

Polish Su-22s after overhaul

The Su-22M4 attack aircraft with its variable-geometry wing stayed in service in the Polish Air Force for an exceptionally long time and so became the last machine of its kind in Europe. With age came overhauls and with them a new finish, which is what this set aims at: it was the work of the repair plant in Bydgoszcz, which gave the single-seat M4 and the two-seat UM3K a uniform appearance.

The basis is formed by a blue-green tone on the lower surfaces and a gray-green one on the upper. Over it are laid three camouflage fields in shades corresponding to the NATO color names, that is, green, brown and black. Anyone building a Polish machine from a photograph of the last years of its service will manage with practically just these five.

Metal at the tail

The difference between the gray-green base and the green camouflage field is smaller than it seems from photographs, and under strong lighting of a model it disappears altogether. It is therefore worth trying both colors next to each other on a test part.

The sixth shade has a special role. It imitates the unpainted metal of the lower part of the rear fuselage and of the moving part of the wing, that is, the places that on this type were not covered with paint because of heat and stress. Without it a model lacks one of the most conspicuous features of the whole design and looks as if it had all been sprayed at once.

The individual shades are tied to American as well as European color references, so they can be used on other machines of the same period too. The shades come from a range built for brush application, so on large areas it works best to thin less and rather add another coat.
