A pin vise, as modelers call this hand tool, is a tool for drilling small holes accurately without the risk of tearing a fragile part. This set contains a body made as a one-piece aluminum alloy forging and ten carbide drill bits ranging in diameter from 0.4 to 1.3 mm. A bearing is fitted in the rear part of the handle, so that the end stays still in the palm and the tool turns smoothly and without snatching under pressure.
Drill at low pressure and let the cutting edge do the work; pressure will only snap the bit. Mark the spot first with the tip of a scalpel or a needle, otherwise the bit will skid on the smooth plastic. At very small diameters, that is 0.4 and 0.5 mm, pull the bit out now and then and clear the swarf so that it does not jam in the hole. Use respiratory protection when drilling into resin; the dust is fine and irritating. Unlike an electric mini drill, a pin vise gives you sensitive control over the depth, and there is no risk of thin plastic melting from the heat.
It is one of the first tools a modeler buys after a scalpel, sprue cutters and a file. It comes in handy on aircraft, vehicles, ships and figures alike, and it lasts for years. The bits are consumables and can be replenished over time.
The bits are sharp and brittle. Keep out of the reach of children and protect your eyes while working, as a broken tip can fly off.
