Three quarters of a millimeter thick and two and a half millimeters wide is the ratio modelers reach for most often. The profile already holds its shape and does not buckle while being glued, yet it stays slender enough not to look like a beam on a finished model. Anyone who builds from profiles regularly tends to have exactly this size on the go at all times.
Working it is straightforward. A knife scores the profile and the break then runs straight, so the ends need no truing up. Longer sections are easy to measure accurately, because the strip lies flat on the board and does not roll like rod. The joint made with cement for polystyrene is strong over the whole area, not just at the edges.
To give a sense of size: in 1:48 scale the section matches a plank of roughly three and a half by twelve centimeters, while in 1:35 it works out as a slightly more slender batten. The material is white polystyrene; it takes paint without a primer and works with putties for plastic models.
One strip measures thirty-five centimeters and is supplied on its own, not as a set of different widths. Anyone who needs many pieces of the same length saves measuring with a simple stop made from an offcut glued to the bench, against which the pieces are cut in one go.
