A square 2.0x2.0 millimeter profile of white polystyrene. The same height and width, so it can be turned without the look changing.
Responsibility details are not available.
With a square profile it does not matter which side you lay it on. That simplifies the work anywhere elements join at differing angles or where a whole structure arises on a single model: a frame then has the same look in every direction. Two millimeters is a mid-size dimension, strong enough for the load-bearing elements of smaller models and yet not too conspicuous.
It is shortened by scoring along a ruler and snapping it over an edge; with a square section it is worth scoring from two opposite sides, so that the break does not wander. It is glued with a liquid polystyrene cement, which draws itself into the mating surface.
When building a frame, glue one plane first on a flat surface and let it dry, and only then add the perpendicular elements. A structure built all at once almost always twists. One piece is 35 centimeters long.
For repeating elements, fence posts for instance, it pays to prepare a simple stop jig from an offcut. Parts measured by hand always differ a little and it shows on a finished structure.
