Four acrylic paints for British aircraft in the Mediterranean: the desert pair for the upper surfaces, azure undersides and a gray-green cockpit interior.
Responsibility details are not available.
The British squadrons deployed in North Africa and over the Mediterranean used a camouflage built on a pair of earthy tones. Dark Earth made up the darker part of the pattern and Mid Stone the lighter, so together they formed an irregular camouflage figure covering the upper surfaces of the wings and the fuselage. From the ground it was effective camouflage over the desert; in the air over the sea it gave the aircraft away instead, which led to later changes.
Azure Blue is the light, slightly greenish blue of the lower surfaces characteristic of the Mediterranean theater. It differs from British home undersides and is the easiest identifying feature of a machine from this area. The fourth bottle is filled with Interior Grey-Green, the standard shade of British aircraft cockpits, used to paint the walls of the cockpit, the canopy frames and part of the instrument panels.
Although there are only four shades, the combination is enough for the complete finish of a fighter or a light bomber without buying further paints. This size of package is the smallest in the range. The paints come from the acrylic blue range, whose consistency is prepared for applying by hand with a brush, so it also suits builders with no spraying equipment. It is applied in two thin coats, the second laid on only once the first has dried perfectly, otherwise the lower layer would dissolve and the brush strokes would stay visible.
