A clean railhead decides how a train runs

A locomotive picks up current through an area the size of a pinhead. As soon as a layer of lubricant residue, wear from tires and oxidized metal settles on the railhead, the transfer worsens before the builder notices: the train starts to stutter, the sound from a digital decoder drops out and the lighting in the cars flickers. On longer lines, where dirt builds up for years and is hard to reach in curves and under tunnels, wiping over with a cloth stops being enough.

What these pads are for

This is the heavier variant intended for a thorough restoration of the surface, not for regular dusting. You reach for it when a continuous deposit has formed on the rail, after a layout has stood unused for a long time, or after building work during which dust from abrasives and plaster got into the track. The manufacturer recommends cleaning like this roughly every six months. The package holds two pieces as replacements for the cleaning car of the Rail Tracker system.

Use and scales

The pads are intended for HO and N scale, that is for the most widespread home layouts. Changing them takes a moment and needs no tools: the worn pad is removed and a new one fitted to the holder. After a rescue cleaning it makes sense to run over the track once more with a finer pad, so that the surface is evened out and loosened dirt is removed. The layout then runs noticeably more smoothly and decoders stop losing signal at spots where they used to drop out reliably.

When to reach for the rescue variant

A typical moment is a layout taken over from somebody else, or a line that has stood under a sheet for a year. There the surface tends to be dull and brownish and a light wipe achieves nothing on it.
