Anybody can pour a clear compound into a hollow. It is harder to get movement into a model: a white crest on a wave, a foaming place under a waterfall, a splash around a vehicle fording a stream. The set is put together for precisely this second task and it will manage both, a calm surface as well as a turbulent current.
It is possible to work on a new scene on its own, but also on a diorama that is already finished or on a grass sheet, where the grass layer is removed in the place of the future channel. The shape of the bottom is colored before applying: a lighter shallow and a darker middle give the result a depth that the compound alone does not create.
Foam and waves are formed only at the end, onto a dry base. They are applied in thin layers and gradually, because a thick dose all at once stays milky and the shape is lost in it. Patience is the only tool here that cannot be bought.
The channel has to be watertight before applying. A leaking joint between the bottom and the edge lets the compound through under the terrain and putting that right is then laborious. The edges are therefore best coated with glue or filler beforehand and left to cure properly. It is just as worthwhile to try an application on an offcut first, so that one can check how the compound behaves on a particular base.
