About product

RLM 81 Braunviolett — an acrylic paint from AMMO of Mig Jimenez

A water-based acrylic modeling paint. RLM 81 is a designation from the German system of aircraft shades, and Braunviolett means the brown-violet tone that appeared on the upper surfaces of aircraft in the late phase of the Second World War. It matters for a modeler to know that surviving samples and period finishes of this designation vary from markedly brown-violet to olive brown, so the shade in the bottle is one of the possible interpretations rather than the single correct answer.

Use

  • Thin it with water or with the same brand's acrylic thinner, never with lacquer or cellulose thinner.
  • For a mottled camouflage, spray at low pressure; the transition then has no hard edge.
  • If you want to tell neighboring dark shades apart, add a drop of a light color to one of them.
  • Always shake the bottle, as settled pigment otherwise changes both coverage and tone.
  • Under the decals use a varnish compatible with acrylics, and even the surface out with a matte varnish at the end.

Who the paint is for

For builders of aircraft subjects who need a particular shade from this designation system and want it ready without mixing. The water base makes both the work and the cleaning up easier, and the paint goes well with other acrylics of the same brand. If you are building a model with a multi-color camouflage, it pays to get the whole group of shades at once: they have the same binder, they thin in the same way and the coats applied follow on from each other without differences in adhesion or in surface texture.

Keep out of the reach of children, ventilate while spraying and protect your airways. Do not thin with lacquer thinners.

FAQ

Period finishes and surviving samples of this designation vary from brown-violet to olive brown, so each manufacturer chooses its own interpretation.

Yes, it is water-based and is thinned with water or acrylic thinner. A lacquer thinner would curdle the binder.

Yes, once thinned to the consistency of milk. Spray several thin coats.

Once it has dried, go over it with a varnish compatible with acrylics, and only then do the decals and the patina.
