Rolling Pin Cobblestone 15mm — a roller with a cobblestone pattern

Around its circumference the roller carries the relief of classic cobbled paving, the kind known as cat's heads in Czech. One pass gives you a sheet of cobbled street, courtyard or driveway. The designation 15mm in the name refers to the size of the pattern, that is to a finer structure intended for smaller figures and smaller scales than the basic version of the same motif is aimed at. The pattern is engraved around the whole circumference, so the individual impressions line up and an area can be put together from several sheets side by side.

The process that gives flat paving

• Roll the compound out between two battens of the same height — uneven thickness of the sheet is the most common reason an impression only comes out halfway.
• Moisten the surface lightly so that the compound does not stick and the edges of the stones stay sharp.
• Roll in one direction and with steady pressure; backing up doubles the stones and smears the joints.
• Lay adjoining sheets so that joint meets joint, and clean the transition up with a pointed tool while the compound is still soft.
• Into the still soft surface you can press ruts, potholes or a manhole cover — the paving then does not look machine-made.

Painting paving

Once it has cured, prime it dark so that the joints stay coated with color. Then break the stones down into several shades of gray and brown, set individual pieces apart deliberately and bring the area together with a thin wash. Drybrushing on the tops of the stones adds the final contrast.
