The most common trouble when covering large areas is not the strength of the material but time. An ordinary plaster mix starts to set before it can be spread over a whole board, and the rest of the bucket ends up as waste. This compound is mixed so as to stay workable longer, and that is why it suits precisely extensive stretches of terrain, where the work goes on in parts and without haste.
The weight of the fill is 1.81 kg. The compound is developed as the counterpart to the shaping sheet of the same line: once applied it bonds firmly with it and creates a permanently hard surface, which holds the shape of the base and stands up to further work.
Besides covering, the mix serves as a glue for plaster castings. Rock faces, outcroppings and similar finished pieces are seated into it, the excess is spread into the surroundings and the transition between a casting and the terrain disappears without any need to reach for another binder.
The surface takes the liquid pigment of the Earth Colors line, so it can be toned in the compound itself or only once it has set. Painting damp plaster has the advantage that the pigment soaks in deep and a scraped edge then does not reveal a white fracture. For a whole area a thinned glaze suits, for details a thicker application.
Over a large area the compound is spread with a wide spatula in thin layers, because a continuous thick layer needlessly adds to the weight and to the drying time. At the edges it is a good idea to let the layer fade out, so that no step arises at the boundary with the surroundings that would have to be sanded down later.
An opened package belongs in a dry, closed container; plaster takes up moisture from the air easily and lumps then spoil the smoothness of the application.
