The abbreviation in the name tends to be a stumbling block: the letter S with a period and the Roman numerals stand for centuries in Spanish, so here the sixteenth to the eighteenth. That span covers the period in which European military fashion changed from the tercios and musketeers, through the Thirty Years War, to regular line armies with pronounced coats and lapels.
The set is the signature palette of a Spanish figure painter and it is put together so that it stands on its own. In it you will find two blues, a pair of reds, a group of browns and khaki for broadcloth and leather, a neutral gray and ivory for highlights, and two flesh tones for faces and hands. Eighteen bottles together cover both the expensive dyed fabrics of officers and the undyed wool of the common soldier.
The difference between randomly bought paints and a considered palette only shows on a display case with several figures. Shades that came into being on one painting table hold together: the brown shades the red without dirtying it, and the gray manages to subdue the blue without turning it purple. That is exactly why signature sets pay off for those who paint a whole unit and want the figures to look like one army.
