A hand-picked selection of acrylic shades for 28 mm miniatures from the American Civil War, from the dark blue of Federal cloth to the brownish-yellow Confederate butternut.
Responsibility details are not available.
The palette was put together by a Spanish miniature painter working under the nickname Archiduque, and he aimed it at 28 mm figures set in the American Civil War, the conflict of 1861 to 1865 between the Union and the Confederacy.
The uniforms of this war are rewarding for a painter precisely because they were so far from uniform. A Federal infantryman wore a dark blue blouse with light blue trousers. Southern regiments were issued gray, but in the field it quickly broke down into the shade known as butternut, a brownish-yellow color from a home-made plant dye whose depth ranged from ocher to cinnamon. Besides the cloth there is the leather of belts and cartridge boxes to handle, the brass of buttons, the wood of gun stocks and the matte steel of barrels.
The third-generation acrylics from this brand are built mainly for the brush and for thin coats, so they take layered glazes as well as drybrushing of edges. On a 28 mm miniature it pays to push the contrast slightly: what looks overdone on the palette blends into a natural whole once dry and seen under gaming light. Feel free to vary the depth of the brownish-yellow cloth from figure to figure; in real Southern regiments it differed from batch to batch.
