A finished handmade model of a spruce 200 mm tall from the manufacturer Model Scene. It is not a kit and not a loose material — the tree is complete and after unpacking it is simply planted into the base. Handmade production means the individual pieces differ slightly in the shape of their crowns, which is an advantage when planting a whole group: the forest does not look like a row of clones.
The spruce is an evergreen conifer with a characteristically narrow conical shape and a dense dark green crown that reaches low down the trunk. That is exactly why it suits anywhere a scene needs to be closed off visually — at the edge of a forest, in the background of a diorama or as a screen behind a building. A height of 200 mm corresponds in 1:35 scale to a tree roughly 7 meters tall, and in 1:48 scale to about 9.5 meters; in the reduced railroad scales it is a mature tree. In shape the spruce suits Central European, Alpine and Nordic scenes, and thanks to its evergreen needles it works in a summer as well as a winter diorama.
Drill a hole in the base to match the diameter of the trunk and glue the tree in with PVA or cyanoacrylate. Cover the foot of the trunk with static grass, moss and conifer litter. In a group, combine different heights and spacings; a monotonous grid gives a scene away at once. For a winter scene you can dust the crown with a fine imitation snow — work in small doses and fix it with a light spray. Protect the crown during transport, as the individual twigs are delicate.
