A finished model spruce roughly 150 mm tall overall from the Czech scenery vegetation manufacturer Model Scene. It is not a kit and not a loose material: the tree is complete and painted, and in a diorama it is simply anchored in place. Because it is made by hand, every piece differs in the shape of its crown and the density of its branching, so a group of trees does not look mass-produced.
Unlike the version with a drawn-out trunk, the crown here starts low above the ground and the tree keeps its typical conical silhouette almost down to the foot. That is exactly how a spruce grows in the open — on a field margin, by an isolated farmstead, at the edge of a pasture or as a solitary tree in the middle of a meadow, where it has light from every side and the lower branches do not die off. In a military diorama a low-branched tree is practical visually too: it visually fills a corner of the base and serves as natural cover for a vehicle or figures. A height of 150 mm corresponds to roughly a five-meter tree in 1:35, an eleven-meter one in 1:72 and a thirteen-meter one in 1:87.
Drill a hole in the base for the foot of the trunk and glue the tree in with PVA or cyanoacrylate. Cover the joint with the terrain using turf, static grass or leaf litter. With a low-branched spruce, allow for the crown taking up space down at ground level too — so think the placement through before you finish the terrain around it, to avoid having to go back to details you can no longer reach. A light dusting of heavily thinned paint from a distance handles blending it with its surroundings.
The tree is supplied finished and painted. The glue, the base and any further scenery materials are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
