Four acrylic shades for the aircraft of the Republican side of the Spanish Civil War. A green upper side, a light blue underside and colors for the recognition markings.
Responsibility details are not available.
In the air the Republican side relied mainly on equipment delivered from the Soviet Union. Biplane fighters with an open cockpit and stubby monoplanes with retractable landing gear were given nicknames of their own in Spain and, together with twin engine bombers, carried the main weight of the fighting over Madrid and over the Ebro. Their coloring was strikingly simple at the same time: a darker green above, a light blue below and prominent red markings by which the machines were recognized at a distance.
Red is one of the shades that cover badly. Do not spray it straight onto green but underlay it first with a light base, ideally with the bone tone from the same package. That saves three or four coats and the area stays smooth. The same trick applies to red bands across the dark areas of a rudder.
Green, on the other hand, takes being applied unevenly. The machines were repainted while in service, different examples received different batches and the sun over Spain drew the color out quickly. So lighten the middle of large areas with the same shade plus a touch of the bone and leave the original tone in places shielded from the light. The pale blue below takes the same treatment, only more subtly, so that it stays an impression of sky beneath the machine.
