About product

Bücker Bü 131D 1:32 - 3D instrument panels from Red Fox Studio

A small set of colored elements with printed relief that are not glued into the cockpit but applied by soaking, like a decal. On a prewar trainer biplane that is an elegant solution: there are few gauges, but they are clearly visible, and hand painting a dial a few tenths of a millimeter across is thankless work even in a large scale. The set is intended for the ICM kit.

What makes the Bücker cockpit special

Compared with fighters it is the complete opposite. Two open stations one behind the other, no canopy, no displays - just a plain panel with a few round instruments, a compass and lever controls. That is exactly why every detail is visible here: nothing covers the cockpit, you can look it over from above and from the side, and an unpainted gauge or bare plastic hits the eye far more than on an aircraft with a dark cockpit under a closed canopy. The layout is similar at both stations, because the machine served for training and had to be flyable from the front and from the rear. The seat belts are also a substantial part of the interior - with open cockpits the viewer's eye goes to them straight away, and a fabric solution looks more convincing than stiff plastic.

Soaking, positioning and decal softener

The easiest way to ruin small elements is by soaking them too long: the film releases while still in the dish, curls up and separating it then is work for the patient. Dip the element briefly and let it release on the paper. If the set also holds belts, apply them wet and fold them straight over the seat and the sides - while they are soft they can be shaped into a natural sag, and a decal softener will help them lie into the form of fabric. On the instrument panel a softener is needed only where the film has to go around an edge; an excess would create wrinkles on a thin panel. Draw the water off with a cotton swab and then do not move the elements for at least an hour. We recommend fixing the finished cockpit with a light semi-matte varnish, because the open space will be exposed to handling during the further steps of the build.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of interwar and trainer machines with an open cockpit.
  • Modelers who do not want to paint small gauges with a brush.
  • Beginners in working with decals - the set is small in extent and easy to follow.

This is a modeling accessory, not a kit. The base model, paints and glue are not included in the package. Check in advance that it matches your kit.

FAQ

Because nothing covers the cockpit. The panel is visible from above and from the side, and bare plastic or an inaccurately painted gauge shows on the model at once.

Apply them wet and fold them over the seat and the sides straight away. While the film is soft it can be shaped into a natural sag; a decal softener will strengthen the effect of fabric.

Yes. The set is small in extent, there are few elements and it calls for no sanding and no gluing. All you need is a smooth glossy base, lukewarm water and patience.
