A resin figure of a Spanish soldier of the first half of the 17th century by Abteilung 502. Both the height of 65 mm and the material are given directly in the name of the set. It is not a vehicle or aircraft kit, but a stand-alone figure intended to be painted and displayed, or to be set into a smaller vignette with a period setting.
The tercios were Spanish infantry formations that from the 16th century combined pikemen and troops with firearms in a single unit. In their day this was one of the most effective infantry organizations in Europe, and in the first half of the 17th century, the period the name of the set gives, this infantry still formed the backbone of the Spanish field armies, even though the ratio of edged weapons to firearms and the look of the equipment were gradually changing. Whether the figure represents a pikeman, a musketeer or a commander is to be checked against the illustration on the packaging.
Resin castings are washed before painting in lukewarm water with dish soap, so as to get the remains of the mold release agent off the surface, on which paint would hold badly. The casting blocks are cut off with a saw or a cutter, never broken off, and when sanding resin protect your airways. If the casting is divided into more parts, they are glued with cyanoacrylate glue, because an ordinary glue for plastic has no effect on resin. Before painting, a thin coat of primer from a spray can or an airbrush pays off. The height of 65 mm is a rewarding size: it allows skin, the texture of cloth and leather and the play of light on metal parts to be worked up, but at the same time it does not forgive coarse transitions, so it pays to work in thin coats and to shade with oils or glazes.
