Spot-On Pigment No. 07 Black Earth

A loose modeling pigment from the numbered Spot-On line from the manufacturer VMS. It carries the sequence number No. 07 and the shade name Black Earth, that is, dark soil. The pigment is a fine powder that is applied dry with a soft brush, or stirred into a suitable liquid and applied as a thin slurry. Once dry, a matte, dusty-looking film stays on the surface.

Use

• Dark deposits in the running gear, around the wheels, on the tracks and in the wheel arches.
• Darkening seams, transitions between surfaces and the places under rivets where dirt naturally collects.
• A base under lighter earthy shades, which stand out markedly over a dark foundation.
• Earthy areas of dioramas and bases where a darker tone of soil is needed.

Work tips

A dark earthy tone looks natural when it stays in the shaded areas and does not cover the whole model evenly. It proves best to apply it first into the recesses and transitions, remove the excess with a dry brush and only then add lighter dust to the horizontal surfaces. The saturation can be tuned by how much powder you leave on the surface. If the layer is to withstand handling, it can be fixed with an ordinary modeling fixative, which you choose according to the clear coat used on the model.
