Spring green belongs to the short period when the grass is still low and glowing, damp in the morning and almost translucent in a photograph. A roll measuring 83.8 x 127 cm makes it possible to lay such an area all at once, without spreading and without waiting for the glue under scatter to dry.
The surface is a vinyl mat with firmly held flock, which does not rub off and does not make dust. The color is fast and the material does not fray even when cut, so it can be shaped with ordinary scissors. Anyone who needs a road, a stream or a pond scrapes the flock off in that place down to the smooth backing and fills the band that arises with gravel or a water compound.
Against spreading, a ready mat has one practical advantage: the area comes out uniform and nowhere is color missing because of imperfectly applied glue. The trade-off for that is a regularity that has to be broken up by hand.
Trees, bushes and clumps then come onto the finished area and give the landscape height. If a mat is only laid down and not glued, a scene can be taken apart after an exhibition and used again; everybody who builds portable modules or photographs models against a changing background will appreciate that. The size of the roll corresponds to the ordinary board of a smaller layout, so a whole area tends to be covered from one piece without a visible joint in the middle.
